CCS joins European Biochar Industry Consortium

Carbon Char Store has joined EBI, the organization blazing the trail for biochar standards and certification and promoting its use in carbon-removing applications.

CCS’ Oliver Grogono says: “EBI’s lead on policy, standards, and market intelligence and opportunities is a key element in biochar’s development and its potential contribution to climate change mitigation. We intend to support and contribute to EBI’s research and its work on standards, risk assessment and commercial opportunities. With Standard Gas’ biochar producing SG100 pyrolysis EfW plant scheduled on stream in Q3 2023, CCS’ role in the sales and marketing of carbon removals underlines the importance of EBI membership.”

“We believe (bio)char has wide ranging commercial applications that have not yet been realised. In combination with the opportunity to sequester large volumes of carbon dioxide and produce valuable co-products, char from waste, in particular, has the potential to revolutionise several industrial sectors,” Oliver continues. “In Europe, EBI and the Ithaka Institute, an international open-source network for carbon strategies, have led in researching and studying the opportunities biochar offers. In managing the European Biochar Certificate, EBI has extensive experience in understanding and mitigating the potential human and environmental health hazards that producing and using biochar presents. Understanding these risks and ensuring that standards are met is a fundamental to the success of any biochar project, and we expect that close collaboration with EBI will help us achieve this.”
